The Order of Cultural Merit (Ordem do Mérito Cultural) was established by law on December 23, 1991, and it was regulated on November 22, 1995. It is awarded to Brazilian and foreign civilians for exceptional service in the filed of culture and arts.
The Order's grades are Grand Cross limited to 50, Commander limited to 150, and Knight limited to 200. The Order might be awarded posthumously.
