The Order of Educational Merit (Ordem Nacional do Mérito Educativo) was established by presidential decree on October 28, 1955, and it has been regulated several times. In order of precedence, it is the eleventh-highest award within the country.
It is currently awarded to recognize domestic and foreign citizens who have contributed exceptional services to the field of education in Brazil. The Minister of Education and Minister of Foreign Affairs are automatically admitted as members of the Order, at the rank of the Grand Cross.
The Order's grades are Grand Cross limited to 80, Grand Officer limited to 160, Commander limited to 200, Officer limited to 240, and Knight limited to 800.
