The Order of Medical Merit (Ordem do Mérito Médico) was established by law on March 24, 1950, and it has been regulated several times. It was founded to recognize national and foreign doctors who have provided noteworthy service to the country,, as well as those who are successful in teaching and researching medical studies.
The Order's grades are Grand Cross limited to 70, Grand Officer limited to 90, Commander limited to 130, and Knight. The Order is ranked eight in the Brazilian order of precedence.
