History
The Order of Bernardo O'Higgins was originally created in 1956 as an adjunct to the Order of Merit. The former consists of the two lower grades of the latter, I Class Bernardo O'Higgins Medal and II Class Bernardo O'Higgins Medal. In 1967, the Order was separated and it was promoted to Order.
It is still awarded to recognize foreign nationals who rendered outstanding services to education, the arts, trades, industries, sciences, humanitarian and social cooperation. It is Chile's second-highest order.
The Order's grades are Grand Cross (added in 1968), Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, I Class Knight and II Class Knight.
It is not clear if the design of the badge was changed with the 1967 reformation.
Known makers include, but are not limited to, Hours, Santiago.
The Order is quite rare.
In Mb, the Order is classified into Types. Type I includes the first two grades of the Order, and Type II consists of awards from 1967 to the present.
Later version feature black enamels on the star.
