History

The Order of Miguel Grau was instituted in 1969 to reward Peruvian navy personnel in recognition of outstanding merit. The Order's grades are Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. It is not clear if the grade denotes the rank of the recipient.

The Order was named in honor of Miguel Grau (1837-1879), a Peruvian war hero who fought against Chilean navy forces during the War of the Pacific. He sank the historical "Esmeralda" naval warship during the engagement.

The Order's official makers are the Peruvian Mint, Lima, and Zuloeta S.A., Lima.
