History

The Military Merit Order of Lieutenants of Artigas (Orden Militar al Mérito de los Tenientes de Artigas) was established in 1979 by the military junta that ruled Uruguay at that time. It was awarded to civilians and military personnel, both national and foreign, who provided distinguished service to the Uruguayan Army. The Order might be awarded to air force personnel.

The Order's grades were five, i.e., Grand Cross. Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The military division's awards depicted crossed swords on the angles.

The Order was officially rescinded on March 6, 1985. However, some sources claim that the Order has never ceased to be granted.

Presumably, the Order was replaced in 1991 by the Order of Military Merit.

There is limited information regarding this item.

This Order features the same design as the Aeronautical Merit Order design.

General José Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850) was an Uruguayan soldier and revolutionary leader who fought at the Uruguayan War of Independence against Brazil, and later, against Argentina. He is considered as the Father of Uruguayan nationhood.
