History

The Order of Prince Edward Island, also referred to as the Medal of Merit, was established in 1996 and formalized in 1997. The Medal is conferred upon both individuals and organizations, either present or long-term residents, who have significantly contributed to the province and its inhabitants, via social, cultural, and economic excellence.

The Medal features a red, gold, white, green, and brown enamelled provincial emblem superimposed on a background of gold. The inscription [MERIT PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND] (for Anglophone recipients) or [MERITE ILE-DU-PRINCE-EDOUARD] (for Francophone recipients) encompasses the emblem in blue and gold enamel. The reverse is blank and the medal is suspended from a 38mm ribbon, featuring white, rust, and green stripes.

A lapel pin is also presented for wear during less formal occasions, appearing as a miniature of the medal.

Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominals "OPEI."

The Order was given Royal Assent on May 29, 1997, and granted status by the Official Precedence of Canadian Orders, Decorations, and Medals on April 2, 1998.
