The Order of The Northwest Territories was established in 2013 and is conferred upon residents of the province who have benefitted their province or country through displays of distinctive excellence. It is the highest provincial honour.
The Chancellor of the Order is the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, as well as a member.
All residents of The Northwest Territories, both current and former, are eligible to receive the award. Non-residents, both Canadian citizens and citizens from other countries, are eligible to become honorary members at the request of the Order's Council. Elected officials may not recive the Order while in office. Posthumous awards may be conferred upon individuals within a year of their passing.
The medal is a stylized white enamelled dogwood, the provincial floral emblem, edged in gold and green detailing. The obverse features the Northwest Territories shield or arms. The reverse is numbered.
