History

The Cross for Yucatan (Cruz de Yucatán) was authorized by decree on May 12, 1853. It was founded to reward Mexican Officers who fought against the Mayan uprising at Yucatan in an engagement known as "Guerra de las Casta".

The Cross was awarded in two Epochs. In the first epoch, the Cross was awarded from the beginning of the uprising to 1848. In the second epoch, the Cross was awarded from January,1849 to the end of the conflict.

The composition of the Cross denotes the rank of the recipient. The silver Cross was awarded to Senior Officer, and the bronze Cross was awarded to Officer. The Senior Officer Cross was worn with a neck band, while the Officer was worn on the chest.

The Cross features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "The National Government to the Defenders of the Civilization."

See the Medal for Yucatán in the Medals & Decorations of Mexico for more information regarding enlisted men awards.
