History

After fifty years of combat for the control of the region, in 1901 the Mexican army defeated the Mayan people at the Yucatán Peninsula. The Cross of Yucatán (Cruz de Yucatán) was instituted in 1902 by the government of Mexico in recognition of the military personnel under the command of General Ignacio Bravo, who suppressed the Mayan uprising during the campaign of 1896 to 1902.

The composition of the Cross denotes the rank of the recipient. The I Class Cross was awarded to Generals and it was made of Gold, II Class Cross was conferred upon Officers and it was made of Silver, while the III Class Cross was awarded to enlisted men and it was made of Bronze.

The Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "Prize of the Yucatan State 1902," and a reverse inscription that can be translates to "Campaign against the Mayans Indians."

The Cross was awarded around 8357 times among members of the National Guard, and the 7th and 10th battalions of the Mexican Army.
