History

The Medal for Defense of Northern Frontier (Medalla de la Defensa de la Frontera del Norte) was authorized by the Mexican government in 1852, in recognition of the Officers and men of the army and National Guard who participated in the defense of the city of Matamoros in October, 1851 and for the actions at Cerralvo and Camargo in 1852.

The composition denotes the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was awarded to Generals, the Silver Medal was conferred to Officers, and Bronze Medal to enlisted men.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "The Mexican Congress in 1852," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "To Accredited Courage and Loyalty in the Defense of Northern Frontier."
