History

The Medal for Oaxaca (Medalla por Oaxaca) was authorized by the state of Oaxaca to reward the military personnel who defended Oaxaca against the French Army during the Second French Intervention at the battles of Juchitan, Miahuatlan, and La Carbonera.

The composition of the Medal denotes the rank of the recipient. I Class Gold Medal was awarded to Generals and Chiefs, while II Class Silver Medal was conferred upon Officers, and III Class Bronze Medal was awarded to the troops.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "He Defended the National Independence in Oaxaca," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "Defeating against Foreign Enemies and the Traitors of their Fatherland."

This Medal is known as well as the Medal of Oaxaca State for the French Intervention (Medalla del Estado de Oaxaca por la Intervención Francesa).
