History

The Medal for Yucatan (Medalla de Yucatán) was authorized by the Mexican government on May 12, 1853. It was founded to reward the Junior Officers and enlisted men who participated in the restoration of the government in Yucatan, where the Mayan Indians rose up since July 1847.

The Medal was awarded in two different epochs. In the First Epoch, the Cross was awarded to men who fought from the beginning of the uprising until the end of 1848. In the Second Epoch, the Cross was awarded to those who fought from January 1849 until the end of the conflict.

The composition of the Medal denotes the rank of the recipient. The Silver Medal was awarded to Junior Officer, while the Bronze Medal was awarded to enlisted men.

The Cross features an obverse inscription that can be translated to "The National Government."
