History

After the Monterrey hurricane of 1909, where an estimated of 4,000 people were killed throughout Mexico, making it one of the deadliest Atlantic tropical cyclones on record, the Order of the Mexican Red Cross (Orden de la Cruz Roja Mexicana) was instituted by President Porfirio Díaz in 1910, in recognition of a group of volunteers who provided assistance for the people of Monterrey affected by the hurricane.

The Order was confirmed by the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1912. It is still conferred upon national individuals in recognition of meritorious service during time of emergencies and catastrophes.

Presumably, the Order consisted of four grades, Grand Cross, Knight, Dame, and Member. However, there is limited documentation regarding this Order.

The Order depicts an inscription that translates to "Mexican Red Cross."
