History

The American Campaign Medal was established by President Franklin Roosevelt by Executive Order on November 6, 1942, as 1 out of 3 campaign medals for service in Second World War Theaters of Operation. The Bronze Medal was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces in recognition of service within the American Theatre between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946. Service in permanent assignment outside the continental limits of the United States, in permanent assignment as a crewmember of a vessel sailing ocean waters for 30 consecutive or 60 aggregate days, outside the continental limits of the United States for 30 consecutive days or 60 aggregate days, or within the continental limits of the United States for an aggregate period of 1 year was eligible for the Medal. Personnel who were awarded a combat decoration while involved in active combat against the enemy were also eligible for the award.

A bronze star emblem was authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote service in the antisubmarine campaign if the recipient was assigned or attached to, and present for duty with, a unit credited with the campaign.
