History

The Mexican Border Service Medal was authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918. The Bronze Medal was initially awarded to National Guard troops, who were ineligible for the award of the Mexican Service Medal, in recognition of federalized service during the Mexican War. The award was later extended to Army and National Guard personnel for service provided between May 9, 1916, and March 24, 1917, or for service with the Mexican Border Patrol between January 1, 1916, and April 6, 1917.

The Medal was produced under private contract.
