The Kearny Cross was established by Major-General David B. Birney on March 13, 1863. The Bronze Cross superseded the Kearny Medal and was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted personnel of the 1st Division (Birney's Division) in recognition of distinguished conduct. It is estimated that the Cross was presented to 463 recipients.
