The Air Force Distinguished Public Service Award was established by the Secretary of the Air Force in 2006 to supplement the United States Department of the Air Forces awards for non-employees. The Gold Medal is awarded to private citizens in recognition of major National contributions to the progress of the Air Force mission. The Medal is most often awarded to members of the United States Congress or major defence contractors. Eligible service must be voluntary and received no profit from the Air Force.
