History

The Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal was initially established as only a ribbon award on June 25, 1962. On June 22, 1964, the award was amended and issued as a Medal with eligibility back-dating to July 1, 1958. The Bronze Medal is awarded to any enlisted member of the Naval Reserve who completes 4 years of qualifying distinguished service since July 1, 1958. The service must be beyond the normal expectations of duty. Qualifying service may include but is not limited to 90% attendance rate for all scheduled reserve drills, 4 annual training periods, and no evaluation scores less than 3.0.

Subsequent awards of the Medal are denoted by bronze star emblems worn on the ribbon.
