History

The Haitian Campaign Medal (1915) was established by Navy Department General Order on June 22, 1917. The Bronze Medal was awarded to United States Navy and Marine Corps personnel in recognition of service, including the protection of life and property, during the United States occupation of Haiti following the outbreak of revolution and breakdown of law and order. Service ashore in Haiti or aboard 1 out of 14 ships operating in Haitian waters between July 9 and December 6, 1915, was eligible for the award. Approximately 5, 200 Medals were issued.

Recipients of the first Haitian Campaign Medal (1915) who subsequently served in Haiti between April 1, 1919, and June 15, 1920, were eligible to wear a top suspension bar inscribed with the dates "1919-1920" on the ribbon to denote the award of the second Haitian Campaign Medal (1919-1920). When the ribbon was worn alone, a bronze star may be worn on the ribbon to denote the award of the second Haitian Campaign Medal.

The Medal is stamped on the rim with the serial number. Numbered versions of the Medal feature the same reverse for the Navy and the Marine Corps. However, unnumbered Medals with a distinct reverse for the Marine Corps also exist, but these are believed to be used for exhibition purposes.
