History

The Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal was established by Joint Resolution of Congress on April 11, 1943, as the highest award for members of the Merchant Marine. The Bronze Star was awarded by the United States Maritime Administration on behalf of the President of the United States to any personnel of the United States Merchant Marines in recognition of distinguished service that goes above and beyond the call of duty since September 3, 1939. The Star was most often awarded during the Second World War.

The Star may be awarded posthumously.

A gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Star.

There may be additional versions of the Star which vary by composition.
