History

The Department of Commerce Gold Medal was established by the United States Department of Commerce in 1949. The Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Secretary of Commerce to individuals, groups, or organizations of the Commerce Department to recognize extraordinary and distinguished performance and contributions to the department. Qualifying service may include qualitative and quantitative performances in leadership, personal and professional excellence, scientific achievement, organization development, customer service, administrative support, or heroism.

Group and organization recipients of the Medal are entitled to wear a silver “O” device on the ribbon. A gold star is also authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the medal.
