History

The NASA Distinguished Service Medal was instituted in 1959. The Bronze Medal is awarded to military or civilian personnel serving in any capacity with NASA or another federal agency in recognition of distinguished and extraordinary service or acts of courage which have personally made a significant contribution to goals of NASA or the interests of the United States. The Medal may also be awarded to astronauts upon the successful completion of their fourth flight, or to commanders and payload commanders upon the successful completion of their second flight. Eligible personnel may also include senior NASA administrators and mission control leaders. Since October 31, 2000, 586 Medals have been awarded.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by design and composition. The first version features a circular design and depicts the NASA seal on the obverse. In 1964, the first version became obsolete and was superseded by the second version, which features a cross design and the addition of enamel. The ribbon style was also changed with the institution of the later version.
