The National Intelligence Cross was established by the National Intelligence Awards Program on August 15, 1993. The Gold Cross is awarded to civilian and military United States Intelligence Community personnel in recognition of conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism, and acts of courage performed in response to a threat to national security and involve of significant risk to life and limb and go above the normal expectations of duty.
