The National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal was established on August 15, 1992. The Bronze Star is awarded to military and civilian members of the United States Intelligence Community who hold a position of great responsibility in recognition of sustained, distinguished and meritorious service which benefits the national security of the United States.
