    There are multiple manufacturers of the Army Distinguished Service Medal. It is known that some early Medals were manufactured in France. A variety of different brooch and suspension types were also used. Early awards, and those officially engraved/numbered, command much higher prices. Hence, prices have a wide range, from $100 to $10,000. The rank, regiment and actions of the recipient will influence the value of this decoration.

Physical Description and Item Details


Brigadier General Andrew J. McFarland (ASN: 0-5086), United States Army, was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal "for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War II." by General Orders No. 98 (1945) of the War Department. He was an American representative at the Potsdam Conference, as Secretary, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and United States Secretary, Combined Chiefs of Staff.

History


The Army Distinguished Service Medal was established by Presidental Order on January 2, 1918, and approved by Congress on July 9, 1918. The Bronze Medal may be awarded to any person, serving in any capacity, with the United States Army who provides exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service to the government whilst in a position of great responsibility. For service during peacetime, the term of duty is narrowed and evidence of a conspicuous significant achievement is required. Persons who are not members of the Armed Forces may also be eligible for the award for exceptional service during wartime only and with approvement from the President.
