Physical Description and Item Details


A superb and exceedingly scarce Austrian made award commissioned by the Qing Government for foreign recipients in Western countries. A large award consisting of eight alternating blue and green peddles, obverse centre with blue enamel surround, in accordance with the Statutes detailed in 1882, this second class award presents two ornately designed silver dragons on a gilt background, both circling a polished coral stone denoting 3rd Grade, reverse with hook suspension attachment, Thunder Cloud suspension hallmarked with F.R. for Rothe, as well as the Austrian silver hallmark ("3" Dog's Head "A") denoting 800 silver content, with light wear and enamel loss from use, elongated and detailed neck loop, with replacement scarlet ribbon.

History


This Order was instituted by Emperor Kuangsi in recognition of exceptional service to the throne and the Qing court. Originally, it was only awarded to foreigners, but in 1908 it was expanded to include Chinese citizens as well.

The II Class, II Grade was conferred upon III rank Diplomatic Envoys and Customs Commissioners.

The Republic of China replaced the Imperial Orders following its establishment in 1912.
