History

This medal is conferred upon Indian citizens in recognition of exceptional contributions to the arts, social services, public affairs, education, industry, literature, sports, medicine, and science. It is also awarded to foreigners for contributions in these fields that positively the nation.

This medal was suspended from July 13, 1977 to January 26, 1980.

The obverse Devanagari inscription translates to "Padma" (lotus) and "Shri" (Mr. or Ms.).
