History

This medal is conferred upon civilians in recognition of saving a life. It can be awarded to military personnel, police officers, and fire fighters for saving a life outside of duty. It can also be awarded posthumously.

This medal was previously known as the Jeevan Raksha Padak, Class II.

The obverse features Devanagari inscriptions, which read as "Ma Bhai" and "Sarvottam Jeevan Rakash Padak". The reverse features the motto "Satyameva Jayate".
