History

This medal is conferred upon all Indian military personnel, members of the Railway Protection Force, Police Force, Home Guards, and Civil Defence who received wounds and injuries as a direct result of active service against the enemy.

It was awarded retroactively to August 15, 1947.

This medal is also known as Parakram Padak.

The obverse features inscriptions in English and Hindi. The Hindi inscription translates to "Truth Alone Prevails".
