This is Japan's highest Order. It is rarely conferred to anyone outside of the Royal Family and Heads of State. It can only be awarded to men, and it can be conferred posthumously.
The Grand Cordon is conferred upon members of the Royal Family, foreign royalty, foreign non-royal Heads of State, and certain Japanese Prime Ministers. Prior to 1947, it was also awarded to distinguished Marshals.
The reverse features Japanese characters.
