Taiwan


Taiwan is officially known as the Republic of China. It is an island nation that is nestled in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Mainland China. It is surrounded by the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Philippines. The capital is Taipei and the total population is over 23 million people. The official language is Mandarin Chinese. Most people in Taiwan are Buddhist or Taoist.

The Taiwan flag was established in 1928. The red on the Taiwanese flag symbolizes the revolutionaries and the blood they shed to create the ROC.

Taiwan has a history that goes back many thousands of years, to the earliest evidence of humans existing on the planet. However, in the 1700s the Dutch colonized the island of Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa. In the First Sino war of 1895, the Empire of Japan conquered the island. After the Second World War, the ROC, led by the Kuomintang, took Taiwan. Afterwards, a democratic period and reforms occurred in the country. In 1996, the first presidential election was held. In the year 2000, the election ended Kuomintang’s status as the ruling group.

The government and politics in Taiwan is the One China policy. The highest award is the title Order of the Brilliant Jade Grand Cordon, it is awarded in one class only.
