This medal was conferred upon all Bulgarian volunteers who had rendered service in Bulgaria's war for liberation in 1877-1887 against the oppressive rule of the Ottoman Empire.

The obverse inscription translates to "Stara Zagora", "Shipka", "Sheynovo", and "19 July 1880."

The reverse inscription translates to "To the Warriors, for the Liberation, 1877-78.”
