History

This Order is conferred upon Bulgarians, foreign citizens, and organizations in recognition of meritorious service in the fields of culture, science, or information. The Order is also awarded to recipients who have rendered valuable service within the education of the Bulgarian population.

The Order has a long history. It was originally instituted in 1909 during the Kingdom of Bulgaria, amended and renamed the Order of Cyril and Methodius during the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1950, and finally re-instituted in 2003 as the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the current Republic of Bulgaria.

The Order was designed by Petar Doychinov and engraved by Onik Odabashyan.

There is a Bulgarian inscription on the obverse and reverse.

See Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, BGR100, in the Orders of the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1878-1946/1950), and Order of Cyril and Methodius, BGR185, in the Orders of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria for more information.

The II Class is also known as the Knight.
