History

This Order was awarded to individual Czechoslovak citizens, and groups, to recognize outstanding merit within the defence of the Republic, and for promoting technological growth within the Armed Forces.

It was also awarded to Army and police personnel for meritorious service, and for personal excellence during combat with the enemy.

There are two main versions of the Order.

The stars awarded from 1955-1960 feature a rearing lion wearing a crown on the obverse, and the inscription "ZA SOCIJALISTIČKA VLAST" on the reverse. This reverse inscription translates to "For the Socialist Fatherland."

The stars awarded from 1960-1992 feature the rearing lion from the 1960 Czechoslovak coat of arms on the obverse, and the inscription "ČSSR" on the reverse.

The reverse of the star's suspension is numbered.

It was discontinued in 1992.
