History

The Cross of the War of Independence was established by Royal Decree on June 1, 1834. It was awarded to Greek military personnel and civilians, as well as to foreigners, for service to the Greek nation in the struggle for independence from Turkey from 1821-1829.

The Bronze Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "Othon King of the Hellenes," and a reverse inscription that translates to "To the Heroic Defenders of the Fatherland."
