History

The Order of Stephen the Great is the highest military decoration conferred in Moldova. It is named in honour of Stephen the Great who ruled as Prince of Moldavia from 1433-1507. He was known for his resistance against the Ottoman Empire and the maintenance of Moldovan independence.

It is conferred upon Moldovan citizens in recognition of skilful leadership in military operations, the protection of human rights and freedoms, acts of bravery during the protection of national security, and all other meritorious acts in defence of Moldova and its independence. It may be awarded posthumously.

The Breast Star features an obverse inscription that translates to "Stephen the Great."
