Moldova


The Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Romania and Ukraine and has a population of 3.4 million. The capital city is Chișinău and the official language Romanian. Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government.

Most of the Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812. After that it was ceded to the Russian Empire and became known as Bessarabia. Between 1856 and 1940 was Bessarabia. Most of the Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812. In 1940 it became part of the Moldavian SSR. On August 27, 1991, the Moldavian SSR declared independence and took the name Moldova. The strip of the Moldovan territory on the east bank of the Dniester river has been under the de facto control of the breakaway government of Transnistria since 1990. Transnistria is an unrecognised state. The area was part of the former Moldavian SSR. Transnistria has been recognised only by three other otherwise mostly non-recognised states.

The Order of the Republic is Moldova's highest order. It is awarded by the President of Moldova for exceptional merits in all fields which benefit Moldova and humanity as a whole. The order was established in 1992.
