History

The Medal of Merit for Church Service was established by King Carol I in 1906. It was awarded to members of the clergy in recognition of contributions to the moral and religious values of Romania as well as other meritorious services. It was later replaced by the Order of Cultural Merit in 1931.

There are two versions of the I Class Medal that differ in inscription. The first features an obverse inscription that translates to 'Carol I, King of Romania," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "Reward for Church Service." The second, awarded from 1907-1931, features an obverse inscription that translates to "Reward for Church Service."
