The Medal of Cultural Merit was awarded to Romanian citizens in recognition of achievements in a variety of cultural fields, including art and literature. It was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.
The I Class Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Romanian Socialist Republic, Cultural Merit."
