Featuring a solid 14Kt. Gold (tested) coat-of-arms centering a dark red enamelled star, mounted to a silver gilt five-pointed star base with silver crossed swords, measuring 50 mm x 50 mm, vertical pinback, missing its catch and with enamel repair to 5 o'clock arm, below catch marked "15 A), remains fine.
The Order for the Defence of the Fatherland was conferred upon Romanian citizens and foreigners in recognition of scientific and political merit, the leadership of military operations, and acts of bravery during combat. It could also be awarded posthumously, but it was permanently suppressed following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.
Recipients of the I Class Breast Star were granted a monetary award of 2000 lei (500 USD) and four additional days of paid leave.
There are three versions of the I Class Breast Star. The first version features the initials “RPR" for "Republica Populară Romînă" (Romanian People's Republic), the second version features the initials “RSR” for "Republica Socialistă România" (Romanian Socialist Republic) and the third version features an obverse inscription that translates to “Romanian Socialist Republic.”
