Star Second Class, Second model, 50x50mm, unmarked. Of very god quality make, in silvered, gilt and enamels, extremely fine condition. Awarded to soldiers for defending the fatherland, also awarded to Romanian secret police.
The Order for the Defence of the Fatherland was conferred upon Romanian citizens and foreigners in recognition of scientific and political merit, the leadership of military operations, and acts of bravery during combat. It could also be awarded posthumously, but it was permanently suppressed following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.
Recipients of the II Class Breast Star were granted a monetary award of 1500 lei (375 USD) and three additional days of paid leave.
There are three versions of the II Class Breast Star. The first version features the initials “RPR" for "Republica Populară Romînă" (Romanian People's Republic), the second version features the initials “RSR” for "Republica Socialistă România" (Romanian Socialist Republic) and the third version features an obverse inscription that translates to “Romanian Socialist Republic.”
