History

The medal was instituted by Sultan Mohammed V. It was conferred in recognition of bravery during WWI to Turkish citizens, and German and Austrian allies. This medal could also be awarded to women.

It is also known as the Iron Cresent or the Gallipoli Star.

The medal was manufactured by Turkey's allied countries and by Turkey's national mints; therefore, quality varies.

The obverse is dated, and it features the cypher of the Sultan.
