History

The Republic of Turkey does not have Orders and Medal distinctions similar to other nations. The Independence Medal is considered to be equal to an Order grade. It was conferred in recognition of extraordinary service in the creation of the Turkish Republic.

The ribbon colour distinguishes between the medal versions.

A red ribbon indicates the medal was awarded for merit and bravery in the Army and National Militia during the War of Independence.

A white ribbon indicates the medal was awarded to those citizens who served behind the lines with merit during the War of Independence.

A medal decorated with a green ribbon was awarded to members of the Grand National Assembly who served with merit behind the lines.

A red-green ribbon indicates the medal was awarded to members of the Grand National Assembly who served with merit on the front.
