Physical Description and Item Details

Italy, Kingdom. An Aeronautic Valour Medal, II Class Silver Grade, c.1930

Medaglia al valore Aeronautico. Instituted in 1929. In silvered bronze, measuring 32.5 mm in diameter, edge nicks, bruised, contact marks, original ribbon, fine.

History

The Medal was founded by Victor Emmanuel III to recognize the exceptional skill, courage, and philanthropy demonstrated by members of the Air Force during operations. It was generally awarded to individual Air Force Pilots, but in 1939 the Medal was expanded to also recognize Unit Commanders and crews whose valourous actions had brought honour to Italian Aviation.

The medal may feature engraver and manufacturer marks, including “Z TAILETTI MOD.V.DI LA LAZZERO DIS.” and “38 MI,” or have no marks at all.

The reverse medallion may feature the engrave details of the recipient.

The Silver Medal was awarded for demonstrating skill and bravery within difficult and life-threatening circumstances.
