This Cross was originally awarded in a single gold grades. In 1907 it was divided into two separate grades by King Victor Emmanuel III, Gold Cross (for 25 years) and Silver Cross (for 16 years). In 1929, the grades of Gold Cross (for 40 years) and Silver Cross (for 25 years) were added, and they feature a surmounting royal crown.
The Silver Cross was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and troops.
