History

This Cross was an unofficial decoration that was awarded to all members of the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia (CSIR) who had rendered brave service on the Eastern Front throughout the infamous Winter Campaign of 1941-1942.

It is also known as the Cross of Ice or the Snow Cross, and it was designed by A. Picozzi in Milan.

These medals may be stamped "LORIOLI MILANO ROMA A PICOZZI MILANO," "LORIOLI A PICOZZI MILANO," or have no engraver or manufacturer marks at all.

There are several known variations of this Cross. The most rare crosses were produced during World War II, while the more common crosses were produced post-World War II.

There are examples of this cross that are composed of silver, bronze, zinc, and other silvered war materials.
