History

Created in Rio de Janerio by Prince Regent joão VI of Portugal, the Medal of Distinction for Cisplatina Campaign (Medalha de Distinção da Campanha Cisplatina) was founded to commemorate all the Portuguese soldiers who participated in the first Portuguese campaign to take the city of Cisplatina, south of Brazil. During the Peninsular War, the Portuguese Empire was trying to capture the recent independent cities in southern Brazil.

The Medal was established with three grades based on the rank of the recipient. The Gold Medal was awarded to General Officers; the Silver Medal to other Officers and civil volunteers; and, the Bronze Medal to enlisted men.
