History

The Medal of Military Merit (Medalha de Mérito Miliar) was added to the Portuguese "Military Medal" (Medalha Militar) after the end of the Second World War on May 28, 1946. It was founded to recognize Portuguese military personnel for exceptional virtue, character, loyalty, competence, and obedience.

It was founded with four classes to be awarded to military personnel who display exceptional military qualities and virtues that merit public respect and acknowledgement. It is normally conferred based on rank, and it may also be awarded to foreigners.

All grades are accompanied by a clasp features the insignia, surrounded by a gilt laurel wreath for the Grand Cross, and the motto translates to "Military Merit."

The I Class Medal is awarded to Officer Generals, Colonels, and Captains with twenty years of service. It is identical to the II Class Medal.
