History

The Portuguese Red Cross Merit Medal is awarded to individuals or groups who have made meritorious contributions to the Portuguese Red Cross and who have promoted its humanitarian values.

There are two versions of the Gold Medal. The first features the former motto of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which translates to "In War, Charity." The second does not have an inscription. Both versions are suspended with rings that feature olive branches.
